"Overall, hunting conditions were good. Of course, the snow on the ground through the weekend, which continued through the week, helped as well," said Jeff Pritzl, DNR deer program specialist. "And we haven't had any bad weather, except for the storm we talked about opening weekend."

Pritzl added that the corn harvest in the state is about 75 percent complete, improving the economy of hunters; although he noted that the harvest is spotty throughout the state.

"And it seems to be driven by the factory floor or the cost of drying corn," Pritzl said.

Eric Lobner, director of the DNR's Wildlife Management Program, said the property in Lincoln County was tested for canker distemper, or CWD, on Friday before opening week. He said wild deer were also found to be infected in Kenosha County, which Lobner said was the first detection of the virus in wild cattle since 2003.

First discovered near Mount Horepa in 2002, the parasitic disease attacks the deer's brain and causes severe weight gain and death. About 60 counties are now affected by CWD.

"We didn't get many of our CWD tests from this season," Lobner said. "It takes anywhere from nine to 14 days to process."

Third, many deer, too, look good. Although the Department of Natural Resources continued its current practice of not releasing deer numbers statewide, the herd is strong, according to Jeff Pritzl, DNR deer specialist.

"It's a lot of people," Pritzl said, referring to Wisconsin's deer population. "Over a million, maybe over a million and a half, sometimes pushing 2 million animals across the country."

Pritzl said Wisconsin is not alone in this area. Looking at the long term, all Midwestern states have had "deer abundance" for many years now.
